William B. Carey Sr., age 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026, in the comfort of his home in Saratoga Springs, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on August 15, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, William was the beloved son of the late Charles Carey, Sr. and Anne Hudome. Throughout his life, he was known for his warm spirit, unwavering dedication to his family, and his passion for bringing people together.
William, after a brief stint in the U.S. Army, enjoyed a long and successful career as an Information Technology professional with many companies, finishing up at New York State. His intelligence, problem-solving abilities, and strong work ethic earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike. William also involved himself in community programs such as Special Olympics, Cub Scouts, even local politics. Following his retirement, he embraced the things that brought him the most joy, family, sports, and the Jersey Shore.
A lifelong lover of basketball, William’s enthusiasm for the game extended far beyond being a fan. He dedicated countless hours to organizing basketball leagues for youths, fostering friendship and healthy competition among players of all ages. Even into his later years, he remained active on the court, where he was an organizer/player in an over-50 basketball league. His love for the game reflected his energetic spirit, determination, and belief in the importance of community and health.
William also found great happiness at the “beach house”. Whether listening to the waves, feeling the warmth of the sun, or simply enjoying time with loved ones by the water, the beach was one of his favorite places to relax and reflect. Above all else, William’s greatest joy was his family. He especially adored his granddaughters and treasured every moment he spent with them. Whether attending their activities, sharing stories, offering encouragement, or simply enjoying their company staring over an ocean, during a thunderstorm, his granddaughters brought immeasurable happiness to his life. The love he had for them was evident in everything he did, and the memories they shared will remain a lasting gift to those who knew him best.
William leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts, including his sons, Andrew Carey (Suzanne), Scott Carey, Kevin Carey (Hillary Mound), and William Carey Jr.(Dawn); his brothers, Gene Carey and Ed Carey (Jill); his sister, Madelyn Thorne (Chuck); his sister-in-law, Meg Carey; and his cherished granddaughters, Epiphany Carey, Lillah Carey, Molly Carey, and Catelynn Carey. He is also survived by many extended family members, friends, former teammates, and fellow basketball enthusiasts who will miss his kindness, friendship, and generous spirit.
In addition to his parents, William was predeceased by his brother, Charles Carey, Jr.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
Interment with military honors will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871.
William’s legacy of dedication, sportsmanship, friendship, and love for family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
