Dear CSBL Members, I have received 68 responses to our June 30th Member Survey and I’d like to now share that data with you. In addition I have elaborated on what the data might suggest and what our options look like heading into the fall and winter.
Avg Tenure | Sep No Vac | Jan No Vac | Jan w/Vac | Play in 21/22 | ||
Colonie | 31 | 5.7 | 65% | 71% | 97% | 97% |
Albany | 37 | 11.4 | 51% | 68% | 92% | 92% |
50’s | 24 | 4.3 | 71% | 79% | 100% | 100% |
60’s | 28 | 7.5 | 57% | 68% | 89% | 96% |
70+ | 16 | 18.1 | 38% | 56% | 94% | 81% |
The numbers seem to be what I expected, in that the percentages of people willing play get larger as: 1) time passes; 2) a vaccine is available; 3) as the respondents are younger. The lowest segment is 70+ yr olds willing to play in September without a vaccine: 38%. The highest segment is 50-59 yr olds willing to play in January with a vaccine: 100%. The best news that I see is that all the age groups are willing to come back to the league in 2021/2022 (after a layoff) assuming there is a vaccine. That number ranges from 100% (50-yr olds) to 81% (70+ yr olds). Keep in mind our attrition rate each year is about 5%, so even an 81% rate for the 70+ yr olds is very positive.
Although there are about two-thirds of the Colonie Division Players (and 79% of the 50-59 yr olds) saying they are willing to play in September without a vaccine I would rather plan on a January start with a greater number of people. It would be problematic trying to redraft teams for the second half, but perhaps we could form groups in the Oct-Dec time period and essentially have scrimmages without referees or scorekeepers. We still have lots of time to determine that.
The takeaway for me is that we have good numbers for starting in January, and very good numbers for starting in January with a vaccine.
Me, Bob Corcione and Mark White met at Gateway Sports on July 1 at 9AM and toured the facility with Ashley Tremblay, the facility director. I am going to email her tentative dates and time and she will speak with the owners and get back to me with a firm price. He first price was as follows:
Full Gym (one full court, or both cross courts) hourly rental: $60; 1/2 Gym (one cross court): $40. Facility Memberships per person (you do not have to be a member to play if the league is paying for the rental, but you could become a member, just as you might have a membership for the YMCA): $40/month; $35/month for Seniors (65+); $20/month for fitness/steam/sauna only.
The facility has the full gym; fitness area (weights, cardio); 5-lane Olympic pool; sauna; steam room; lockers. They also have a meeting room where we can hold our board meetings or drafts.
They would require us to have insurance, so that will add cost. I’ve asked Ashley to get me the name of their insurance broker so that I can contact them for a quote. I will also be getting a couple other quotes for comparison. When I look at the total we pay to Lisha Kill (between the rent and the shower add-on) it works out to be about $415/week. We are there for about 9 hours a day, so the hourly rate is roughly $46.
Hopefully come January Lisha Kill will be there for us, but I think it’s wise to have a plan B. Even if we stick with Lisha Kill it might be good to play a game at Gateway this year like we did at ACP last year. Certainly our Board of Directors will continue to discuss that.
Best regards,
